Chichester Commercial Photographer – WWI Centenary Show by Creative Education UK

Marcus Dilly of Creative Education UK puts on a great show. Whether it’s his unique children’s storytelling World of Wonder days or his informative yet engaging history shows in schools, Marcus knows how to tell a story.

Marcus has hired me both as a commercial photographer and event photographer several times over the last year or so and it’s always a pleasure – frankly it’s a fun day out for me as well as the audience.

As it’s the centenary of the end of World War I, he is putting on a special show which takes the children on an interactive journey from the start through to the end of the war, revealing the reasons it started, what life was like in the trenches for those conscripted and for those left behind back in Blighty, how it changed the world and the reasons we remember.

Marcus asked me to photograph the show at a school in Chichester for his website and to help spread the message before the end of the centenary. Due to the nature of the show, I really wanted to convey the dark, and emotional atmosphere he stirs up. So I opted for a couple of off-camera flashes on stands either side of the ‘stage’ to give some harsh, directional light cutting through for the more serious sections.

The show is compelling and Marcus’ delivery ensures the children unwittingly learn things that they might not from a standard history lesson. Their faces said it all and they couldn’t wait to join in.

Marcus has a perfect balance between delivering a fun and exciting experience whilst understanding the responsibility he has to ensure the serious message of war is heard. I just wish something like this was available to me when I was at school. I may just have passed my history GCSE…
